This projects goal is to purchase at least a cow and goat that will be given to a vulnerable widow, orphan or a person with a disability. This gives them the ability to begin raising a small herd of goats or cattle that will provide them with a source of income. This is one of the most powerful programs we have done in Uganda. It truly changes lives.
One basic solution is to provide the means for a widow or orphan to have a source of income. Our project will do that by providing them with a a cow or goat. They are not allowed to eat the goats, they can only sell or trade them. 50% of the goats have multiple offspring at birth and can give birth twice a year. They can trade 7 goats for a milk cow or a bull.
It is possible for a goat recipient over a period of 2 or 3 years to accumulate as many as 10 to 15 goats. They can sell them or they can trade 7 for a milk cow or a bull. With the proceeds we have seen scores of women pay for their children’s school fees or build a hut. Some have purchased land on which to grow crops. Some have even started businesses. The local government has humbly told our NGO that we are doing things for their people that they cannot afford to do. Very appreciative.
